Browns STs Coach Wanted To Sign K Robbie Gould, But Management Thought He Was Too Expensive?

Armando Salguero reports that Browns special teams coach Chris Tabor wanted to sign veteran K Robbie Gould last year after Patrick Murray hurt his knee.

However, the team elected to bring in Cody Parkey because management reportedly decided Gould was too expensive.

Of course, Parkey would go on to miss three field goals, including a potential game-winning 46-yard attempt.

However, a Browns source tells Nate Ulrich that money wasn’t a factor in the Browns’ decision to sign Parkey this past weekend instead of Gould and referred to Salguero’s report as “ridiculous.”

Money played no role in the decision,” the Browns source said Monday morning. “It’s ridiculous to think that it would.

The Browns signed Parkey to a one-year, $525,000 contract while adding Gould would have could them $985,000, considering that he’s a veteran with 10 or more credited seasons.

The Browns have a ton of cap space right now, so it would be surprising to see them make a decision strictly based on money right now.

Parkey, 24, originally signed on with the Browns as an undrafted free agent out of Auburn back in May of 2014. He lasted just a few months in Indianapolis before he was traded to the Eagles in return for RB David Fluellen.

The Eagles elected to cut Parakey loose coming out of the preseason close to a month ago.

This season, Parkey has converted three of six field goal attempts and his only extra point try for the Browns.
