Browns Trading Up For Marcus Mariota Is A “Very Real” Possibility

According to quarterbacks coach George Whitfield, the idea of the Browns trading up for Oregon QB Marcus Mariota is a “very real” possibility.

It’s a very real situation, it’s always going to be a business and bottom-line situation,” Whitfield told Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “And here they are with two first-round picks, and there are some talented young guys in this draft again that can play quarterback, and if they make that decision to bring him in, that’s big for him to get a chance to go in and compete with Johnny.

There has been a lot reports suggesting that the Browns could make the move up for Mariota, given that they’re armed with two first-round picks this year — No. 12 and No. 19 overall.

On top of that, new Browns QBs coach Kevin O’Connell has been working with Mariota for a number of weeks and is a familiar with him as anyone.

Jason Cole reports that the Browns are the hottest team after a quarterback this offseason and are willing to look to the trade market to upgrade at the position, so it’s clear that all options are on the table right now for Cleveland.

Former NFL executive Joe Banner reported earlier that “many” teams already have Mariota clearly rated ahead of FSU QB Jameis Winston.

If the buzz surround Mariota continues to grow in the coming months, there is a very real chance that the Titans could auction off their No. 2 overall pick for the right to take which ever quarterback is still on the board.

We’ll have more regarding the Browns and their search for a quarterback as the news is available.

  1. If the Browns want to move up they need to get past the Skins at pick 5. Hello Raiders!!!I see a lot of uninformed Raiders fans demanding both 1st rounders for the trade. Not feasible. The Raiders #4 pick is worth 1800 points per the draft trade model while the Browns two 1sts are 1200 for the #12 and 875 for the #19. That’s 275 points to high. No way they give up both 1s. If they trade us the #12 pick (875 points) we could then ask for their #43 pick in Round 2 (480) and their #108 pick in the Round 4 (78). That’s a trade value of 1758 for our 1800 point pick. The Browns move into position to get Marriota and the Raiders now have 6 picks in the top 110. That’s a 1, two 2s, a 3, and two 4s. That’s six quality picks for a team with plenty of holes to fill. Here’s a quick mock of those 6 picks:

#12: Shane Ray OLB Missouri- A monster olb who will enable Khalil Mack to move inside to mlb to replace Nick Roach who’s career may be done due to concussions. A lb corps of Ray, Mack and Sio Moore would be beastly!!!

#35: Owamagbe Odighizuwa DE UCLA- After a good showing at the combine Odig moves up into the early 2nd round. A relentless terror coming off the edge, the Raiders add some young talent to the D-line.
#43: Quinton Rollins CB Miami (Ohio)- Another combine winner, Rollins would compete immediately for a starting CB spot.
#68: Javorius Allen RB USC- The Raiders get a good complement to Latavius Murray. A patient runner with good but not all world speed and great hands out of the backfield.
#99: Phillip Dorsett WR Miami (Florida)- After addressing the #1 receiver spot in free agency, the Raiders can wait on the position till the mid rounds. In Dorsett they get a TY Hilton like receiver. Super fast 4.25 40 in the combine. Would be a slot WR coming in but could see more playing time as he develops. KR and PR could be an option as well
#108: Henry Anderson DE Stanford- Justin Tuck provided veteran leadership but not a lot of production. Here’s a guy to spell Tuck this year and replace him next year.
