Browns Reiterate That There Will Be A QB Competition Next Year

Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam says there will be competition at the quarterback position this offseason.

You know, I think Norv (Turner) and Chud (Rob Chudzinski) have been very open that they like a lot about what Brandon (Weeden) does, but we’re gonna have competition at that position,” said Haslam, per Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland. “I think competition makes us all better. We’ll see where that competition comes from.

The Browns currently have Brandon Weeden, a first-round draft pick last year, Colt McCoy and Thaddeus Lewis on their depth chart, but the new regime in Cleveland has been reluctant to endorse Weeden.

One name linked to the Browns has been San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith as his previous experience with new OC Norv Turner could be selling point for both Cleveland and Smith. There has also been some speculation that Cleveland could target Patriots backup QB Ryan Mallett or potentially even Michael Vick, but Grossi seems to think that pursuing Vick is unlikely.
