Browns Will Until Wednesday To Name Starting Quarterback

Browns HC Mike Pettine didn’t commit to rookie QB Johnny Manziel remaining the team’s starter for next week’s game, despite replacing Brian Hoyer during Sunday’s loss to the Bills.

  • Pettine mentioned that he will have an announcement on Wednesday regarding who will be the starter as he wants a decision to me made in a “less emotional environment.
  • Pettine said of the quarterback switch: “We were down, needed a spark.”

“It’s not like we’re just going to go back to Brian,” Pettine said, via ESPN’s Adam Caplan. “This has been a cumulative thingwhere discussions about a change at quarterback have been more and more lively. We’ll evaluate both quarterbacks and have a decision soon.”

Manziel finished the fourth quarter completing 5-of-8 passes for 63 yards to go along with 13 yards rushing and a touchdown.

As for Hoyer, finished the game with 192 yards passing on 18-of-30 to go along with two interceptions and no touchdowns.

The move to Manziel really isn’t all that shocking given that Hoyer has really struggled in recent weeks to move the ball. The Browns are still 7-5, but they really need better play from the quarterback..

Even if Hoyer is able to retain the job for another week, there will be even more pressure for him to perform.

We’ll have more updates in the coming days regarding the Browns decision.
