Josh Gordon Facing One-Year Ban After Failing Another Drug Test

Update:

The Cleveland Browns have released a statement regarding Josh Gordon‘s new suspension.

Clearly we are very disappointed to hear the latest report regarding Josh. At this point, due to the confidential nature of the NFL’s substance abuse policy, we have not been made aware by the league of a failed test. We are in the process of gathering more information and will provide further comment at the appropriate time.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Browns WR Josh Gordon is facing a one-year suspension after failing another drug test.

  • Pro Football Talk confirms the report and adds that Gordon tested positive for alcohol.
  • PFT’s source added that Gordon is unlikely to file an appeal at this point, and his one-year suspension is likely a “done deal.”
  • Gordon was previously arrested for a DUI, so alcohol was one of the substances Gordon was being tested for, according to PFT.

There was already talk that Gordon was unlikely to be back with the Browns for the 2015 season, so this could pretty much seal the deal.

The Browns wound up suspending Gordon for violating team rules ahead of their season finale, which happened to be his third suspension in the past two years, and could have prevented him from becoming an unrestricted free agent after the 2015 season.

However, now that he has reportedly failed another test, it’s hard to say if any team would even be willing to give the talented young receiver another shot, especially when you consider that he’s facing a year-long ban.

Gordon, 23, would have had just one more year remaining on his four-year, $5.342 million rookie contract that$3.8 million included guaranteed.

However, Ian Rapoport points out that Gordon’s suspension will keep be under contract through the 2016 season, at which point, he’ll just be a restricted free agent.

This year, Gordon appeared in five games and caught 24 passes for 303 yards receiving, but no touchdowns.

We’ll have more regarding Gordon and the Browns as the news is available.
