New Buccaneers HC Bruce Arians mentioned during an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show Wednesday that they’re going to build the team around QB Jameis Winston.
“His willingness to work is unbelievable,” Arians said, via Greg Auman of The Athletic. “He’s in the office at 5 o’clock in the morning. I have no qualms about that. There’s no doubt. The whole thing is going to be built around him.”
Arians added that he’s known Winston for a long time and thinks he has a great feel for him.
“I’ve known him for a long time,” Arians said. “We all make mistakes. He’s made his. I’ve made mine. I feel like I’ve got a great feel for him, his excitement for the game.”
A few weeks ago, Buccaneers GM Jason Licht announced that Winston will be returning as the team’s quarterback for the 2019 season.
“Jameis Winston will be here,” Licht said, per Ryan Bass. “He has done some amazing things. Accomplished more than some of the elite quarterbacks at his age. There’s a lot to like about Jamies and he’ll be here next year.”
Winston, 24, is a former first-round pick of the Buccaneers back in 2015. He’s set to make a base salary of $705,000 for the 2018 season and will earn $20.922 million for the 2019 season under his fifth-year option.
In 2018, Winston appeared in 11 games for the Buccaneers and thrown for 2,992 yards while completing 64.6 percent of his passes to go along with 19 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. He has also rushed for 281 yards and a touchdown.
