Buccaneers “Absolutely” Looking For A QB To Compete With Mike Glennon

New Buccaneers GM Jason Licht told reporters at the Scouting Combine that they are “absolutely” looking to add a quarterback at some point during the offseason to compete with Mike Glennon next year.

Absolutely,’’ Licht said, via The Tampa Tribune. “New coach, new regime, you can’t just hand the keys over and say this guy is our starter. You have to see what he is, and competition drives the best out of everybody. So, that’s what we’ll be looking for.’’

HC Lovie Smith mentioned earlier in the week that they would consider taking a quarterback at No. 7 overall, depending on how things play out this May.

“I know enough about that draft to know, yeah, there’s someone that would be worthy of the seventh pick because everything is on the board right now,” Smith said, per Rick Stroud of The Tampa Bay Times.  “Whenever you have a chance to get a franchise quarterback, you have to consider that.”

Mike did some good things. But he did some good things as a rookie,’‘ Smith said. “To say right now that Mike is the answer and he’s our quarterback of the future and we’re going to build around him and give him a 20-year contract right now, you’re not there.”

The Buccaneers recently signed veteran QB Mike Kafka to a contract, but it seems likely that they will add more competition in the coming weeks. Some have speculated that they could look to the free agent market for an option like Michael VickMatt Cassel or Josh McCown.
