Buccaneers Decline To Pick Up Doug Martin’s Fifth-Year Option

Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports that the Buccaneers declined to pick up the RB Doug Martin‘s fifth-year option.

This move would have cost the Buccaneers $5.621 million for the 2016 season. However, this figure is guaranteed for injury only and wouldn’t have prevented them from working out a long-term deal that would come with a lower cap figure.

Martin, 26, is in the final year of his four-year, $6,787,528 rookie contract, which included $5.472 million guaranteed. He stands to make a base salary of $1,315,572 for the 2015 season before becoming an unrestricted free agent next year.

In 2014, Martin appeared in 11 games and ran for 494 yards on 135 carries (3.7 YPC) to go along with 13 receptions for 64 yards receiving and two touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 45 running back out of 57 qualifying players last year.
