Buccaneers LT Donald Penn Likely Released If Anthony Collins Is Signed

Update:

Ian Rapoport reports that with it appearing likely that the Buccaneers will sign OT Anthony Collins, veteran LT Donald Penn could be on the chopping block in the coming days.

Collins already has a visit scheduled, and numerous reports continue to suggest that Collins is likely to end up in Tampa Bay next year.

Penn, 31 in April, has two years remaining on his six-year, $41.7 million contract that included $18.8 million guaranteed. He will count $8.1 million against the Buccaneers’ 2014 salary cap, so it seems like a reasonable idea that they could approach him about reducing this figure.

Releasing him outright would free up $7,416,665 in cap space, according to OverTheCap.com.

Pro Football Focus has Penn rated as the No. 30 offensive tackle in the league last season.

Adam Caplan of ESPN reports that the Buccaneers have yet to approach LT Donald Penn regarding a pay cut, but adds that releasing him at some point is not out of the question.

Recent reports have indicated that the Buccaneers could pursue Chiefs LT Branden Albert in free agency, so it appears as though Tampa Bay isn’t sold on Penn being their starting left tackle next season.

  • Caplan adds that Penn will be 31 in April and has a 2014 cap figure of $8.1 million.
