Buccaneers Place RB Antone Smith & DE Howard Jones On I.R. & Promote RB Russell Hansbrough

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers officially placed RB Antone Smith and DE Howard Jones on injured reserve with a knee injury and promoting rookie RB Russell Hansbrough to their active roster.

Smith suffered a season-ending injury during Thursday night’s loss to the Falcons.

Smith, 31, originally signed on with the Lions as an undrafted free agent out of Florida State back in 2009. After brief stints with the Vikings and Texans, Smith joined the Falcons during the 2009 season and spent a number of years in Atlanta.

Smith played briefly for the Bears last year before signing on with the Jets during the preseason. Unfortunately, the Jets cut him loose coming out of the preseason

The Buccaneers signed him to a contract a few weeks ago.

In 2016, Smith appeared in three games for the Buccaneers and ran for 47 yards on 10 carries (4.7 YPC) to go along with six receptions for 77 yards receiving and no touchdowns.

Hansbrough, 22, signed on with the Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent out of Missouri. He was one of the team’s final roster cuts before signing onto their practice squad.

Tampa Bay waived Hansbrough a few weeks ago before signing him to their practice squad and later getting called up to their active roster a few weeks ago. The Buccaneers cut him loose a month ago but signed him to their practice squad soon after.

During his four-year college career, Hansbrough recorded 467 rushing attempts for 2,344 yards (5.0 YPC) and 15 rushing touchdowns. He also caught 30 receptions for 128  receiving yards (4.3 YPC).
