Buccaneers Releasing CB Alterraun Verner

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Buccaneers are releasing CB Alterraun Verner on Thursday.

Rapoport mentions that the future of former first-round pick Vernon Hargreaves helps explain why the Buccaneers are moving on from Verner.

Verner, 28, is a former fourth-round pick of the Titans back in 2010. He spent four years in Tennessee before signing a  four-year, $25.5 million contract that included $14 million guaranteed with the Buccaneers in 2014.

Verner was set to make a base salary of $6.5 million for the 2017 season.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Verner will free up $6.5 million of available cap space while creating no dead money.

In 2016, Verner appeared in all 16 games for the Buccaneers and recorded 16 tackles, one interception and seven pass defenses.
