Buccaneers Reportedly Set To Sign Former Browns QB Alex Tanney

Adam Caplan of ESPN reports that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are set to sign former Browns QB Alex Tanney.

  • Caplan adds that Tanney “may get a chance to compete” for the No. 3 quarterback position.

Tanney, 26, had two years remaining on his three-year, $1.485 million contract with Cleveland before he was released.  After the Browns drafted Johnny Manziel and added Connor Shaw as an undrafted free agent, it was clear that the team wanted to go in a different direction.

Head Coach Lovie Smith has made it clear that QB Josh McCown was signed to be the starter for Tampa Bay.  Mixed reports have emerged regarding second-year QB Mike Glennon‘s future with the team, though it would appear his job is safe considering his relative success as a mid-round rookie and inexpensive contract.

Tanney will likely compete with QB Mike Kafka, and undrafted free agent QB Brett Smith out of Wyoming.  Kafka has only thrown 16 passes in his three-year career in Philadelphia, and Smith is considered a long shot to make the team.

Tanney has spent time with the Chiefs, Cowboys and Browns, though he is yet to take an NFL snap in a regular season game.
