Peter Schrager is reporting that the Buccaneers are signing veteran K Nick Folk to a contract on Friday.
This officially opens up a competition with 2016 second-round pick Roberto Aguayo.
Despite the big investment in Aguayo, the Buccaneers made it clear that they were going to bring in some competition for him this summer. Last year, Aguayo converted 22 of 31 field goal attempts (71 percent) and 32 of 34 extra point tries (94.1 percent).
Folk, 32, is a former sixth-round pick of the Cowboys back in 2007. He spent over two years in Dallas before he signed on with the Jets in 2010 as a free agent.
Folk was entering the final year of his four-year, $12 million contract that included $2.1 million guaranteed and set to make a base salary of $3 million for the 2017 season when the Jets released him close to a month ago in a move that freed up $3 million of available cap space.
In 2016, Folk appeared in all 16 games for the Jets and converted 27 of 31 field goal attempts (87.1 percent) to go along with 24 of 26 extra point tries and 39 touchbacks.
