Still A Chance CB Eric Wright Plays For The 49ers

49ers GM Trent Baalke told reporters on Tuesday that it’s a “possibility” that free agent CB Eric Wright could play for the 49ers.

“With respect to Eric, there’s always a possibility that he becomes a Niner at some point, it’s just not now,” Baalke said, via CSN Bay Area.

The trade with the Buccaneers was voided on Monday and Tampa Bay subsequently released Wright.

Baalke added that they were aware of Wright’s recent arrest and the Buccaneers were open about the situation.

“As far as being aware of his latest situation in L.A., absolutely, the Bucs were very forthcoming with that information,” Baalke said Tuesday. “So (we) definitely knew what the status was.

“Our medical staff wasn’t convinced he was ready to be put onto the field, so we didn’t pass him.”

Albert Breer reports that the CB Eric Wright failed his physical with Niners, which nullifies the trade and reverts his rights to the Buccaneers.

Wright, 27, will now be an unrestricted free agent, but it’s hard to say what kind of interest he’ll find. After all, the best return the Buccaneers could secure for Wright was a conditional seventh-round pick.

Wright was recently arrested on suspicion of DUI in Los Angeles, which is not going to help him find a new team.

Josina Anderson is reporting that the Buccaneers have traded CB Eric Wright to the 49ers in return for a conditional late-round pick in 2014.

• Ian Rapoport reports that Wright will need to pass a physical before the deal is completed. 
• Jason Cole keeps “hearing” that the 49ers do not want to keep CB Carlos Rogers, so this could be an indication that he could be on his way out of San Francisco.
• Albert Breer reports that the Buccaneers were planning to release Wright if they couldn’t find a trade partner.

Wright, 27, restructured his contract back in April and was expected to start opposite of Darrelle Revis this season. Wright’s contract is a one-year deal worth $1.5 million and includes no guaranteed money.

• Rapoport adds that Wright’s contract could be worth as much as $3 million this season.

Tampa Bay did draft Johnthan Banks in the second-round of this year’s NFL draft, so it’s possible that they feel comfortable with him as a starter.

As for San Francisco, it appears as though Rogers or Nnamdi Asomugha could be on the chopping block as the team heads into training camp.

Rogers, 32, is set to make $5.5 million for the upcoming season while Asomugha, also 32, signed a one-year deal worth $1.35 million which includes no guaranteed money.

It’s pretty clear that the 49ers will hold a competition for a roster spot.
