Bucs WR Mike Williams Facing Misdemeanor Charges

According to Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times, Buccaneers WR Mike Williams has an arraignment in court set for Feb. 24 regarding “misdemeanor charges of criminal mischief and trespassing” that date back to an incident that occurred in December of last year.

The Buccaneers have released a statement regarding Williams’ situation.

“We have spoken with Mike Williams and the local authorities regarding the charges that have been filed against him,” the Bucs said in a statement issued by director of communications Nelson Luis. “All of our players are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the high character and moral responsibility that we demand as representatives of the Buccaneers organization.

Previous reports have indicated that the team was concerned about Williams’ behavior at the end of the 2013 season and there has been some speculation that the team could move on at some point in the near future.

Williams, 26, signed a six-year, $40.25 million contract that included $9.4 million guaranteed with the Buccaneers last year, so parting ways with him won’t exactly be easy given that they would incur a $6.4 million cap hit by doing so.

According to Overthecap.com’s salary calculator, the Buccaneers could designate him as a June 1 release which would at least free up $600,000 in cap space.
