Cam Newton Has No Interest In A Pay-As-You-Go Contract

Jason La Canfora reports that Panthers QB Cam Newton has no interested in signing a similar contract similar to the deals secured by fellow 2011 draft picks Andy Dalton or Colin Kaepernick.

Both Dalton and Kaepernick signed pay-as-you-go contracts that include little in terms of signing bonus and upfront money.

Instead, La Canfora’s sources have said that the Panthers are well aware of the fact that locking Newton up long-term will require “a substantial full guarantee” in excess of $50 million.

As of now, there are no planned discussions between the two parties and Newton is reportedly in no rush to sign a long-term deal. In fact, he could wait until the Seahawks address QB Russell Wilson‘s contract next year.

The Panthers picked up Newton’s fifth-year option, which will run them $14.666 million for the 2015 season.

This season, Newton has completed 61.2 percent of his passes for 983 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. Newton has also contributed 42 yards yards on 14 carries.
