Cardinals Discussing A Contract Extension With QB Carson Palmer

Cardinals GM Steve Keim told reporters that they have spoken to QB Carson Palmer’s agent, David Dunn, regarding a potential contract extension that would keep him in Arizona for the foreseeable future.

I won’t get into specific points of the negotiations but we’ve had some dialogue with Dave Dunn,” Keim said, according to Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic. “He (Palmer) has done a great job for us.”

The Cardinals sent a 2013 sixth-round draft pick and for a conditional pick in the 2014 that became a seventh-round selection to the Raiders in return for the veteran quarterback.

Palmer, 34, is in the second year of his three-year, $26 million contract that included $10 million guaranteed and will make a base salary of $8 million for the 2014 season. However, the final year of his deal actually voids if he is on the Cardinals’ roster five days after this year’s Super Bowl, so he’s essentially the final year of his current contract.

During his first year with the Cardinals, Palmer threw for 4,274 yards while completing 63.3 percent of his passes to go along with 24 touchdowns and 22 interceptions.

This year, however, Palmer has been hampered by a never issue in his shoulder. He was able to return last week and HC Bruce Arians has said that he’s close to 80 percent healthy right now, but improving.
