Cardinals GM Steve Keim told reproters on Thursday that he never received a call from the Patriots regarding a trade for WR Larry Fitzgerald last year.
“I was trying to find someone to fire,” Keim said. “Because they never called me.”
Tom Curran of CSN New England reported back in January that the New England Patriots were interested in trading for Fitzgerald last offseason, but the Cardinals have essentially eliminated any possibility of Fitzgerald being traded after they restructured his contract.
The Cardinals will face a tough decision regarding Fitzgerald next year as his cap figure balloons to $23.659 million in 2015.
Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.com previously mentioned that Fitzgerald is essentially entering “the equivalent of a contract year” with the Cardinals in 2014.
In the past two years, Fitzgerald has seen his production dip a bit. Over this span of time, he’s averaging 77 receptions for 876 yards receiving and two touchdowns. While that’s pretty decent for a No. 2 receiver, it’s hardly the type of production you’re hoping to see from someone making quarterbacks money.
Of course, the Cardinals quarterback situation has drastically impacted these figures, so with that in mind, Fitzgerald deserves the benefit of doubt.
