Cardinals “Hopeful” They’ll Be Able To Re-Sign DL Calais Campbell, But No Timeframe For Deal

Cardinals GM Steve Keim mentioned that he’s “hopeful” that they’ll eventually be able to get a long-term extension in place for DL Calais Campbell. However, he wouldn’t characterize as a deal being close.

“Hopeful, but people ask all the time whether I think we’re close or we’re not,” Keim said, via AzCardinals.com. “I don’t think it’s fair for us or the player to make a comment because, really, I don’t know what close is anymore. We’ll just continue to stay aggressive, though. That’s the one thing I’ve said earlier: Whether it’s signing players, whether it’s readjusting guys who need to be signed for extensions, we’ll continue to stay aggressive and try to keep our foot on the gas pedal.”

According to Keim, they don’t have a timeframe to get an agreement in place with Campbell, but he added: “[T]here are always points in a negotiation when it’s more pressing than not.”

Campbell, 29, is a former second-round pick of the Cardinals back in 2008. He’s currently in the final year of his five-year, $55 million contract that included $17 million guaranteed and stands to make a base salary of $9.5 million for the 2016 season

In 2015, Campbell appeared in all 16 games for the Cardinals and recorded 61 tackles, five sacks, a fumble recovery and two pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 14 interior defensive lineman out of 123 qualifying players.
