Cardinals Intend To Get A Long-Term Contract Done With DE Calais Campbell

Cardinals general manager Rod Graves joined Arizona Sports 620 on Thursday and mentioned that he intends to keep free agent DE Calais Campbell in Arizona beyond just the 2012 season, per Darren Urban of AZCardinals.com.

Calais will be with us, rest assured,” Graves said. “We will continue to focus on getting a long term deal in place and it’s a process. But he will be an Arizona Cardinals player this year and we are hoping certainly to extend that to a long-term deal. Conversations are continuing with his agent.”

Campbell, 26, has quickly become the teams best defensive player and it’s not surprising to hear that the Cardinals are plans to keep him long-term. The franchise tag has seemed like it was a foregone conclusion but the Cardinals will up to March 5th to get a new deal in place. If not, they’ll use the tag and at least buy themselves another few months to negotiate.

We have Campbell listed as the #7 best available free agent in our Top 50 Free Agents list.
