Cardinals Optimistic WR Larry Fitzgerald Will Be Back In Arizona Next Year

Cardinals president Michael Bidwill believes WR Larry Fitzgerald will be back with the team in 2015.

I’m sure we’ll get it worked out,” Bidwill said, via Josh Weinfuss of ESPN. “We’ve had a couple of conversations that I think were productive so we’ll continue those discussions.

“Without getting into too much, I think it’s perfect for us and it’s perfect for him,” Bidwill said. “And we should be able to work this out.”

  • Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic reported a week ago that the Cardinals and representatives for Fitzgerald have had “positive, but preliminary” discussions regarding a new contract.
  • Sources tell Somers that the two sides yet to discuss money, so they are clearly in the early stages of negotiations.

Previous reports have said Arizona is expected to ask Fitzgerald to make a pay cut from his $15 million salary for the 2015 season.

However, Cardinals GM Steve Keim told reporters a few weeks back that they have already factored in Fitzgerald’s staggering cap figure into their financial situation.

Fitzgerald, 31, is in the fourth year of his eight-year, $128.5 million contract that included $50 million guaranteed. After reworking his contract, Fitzgerald received an $11.75 million signing bonus and has a base salary of $1 million for the 2014 season.

Next year, Fitzgerald has an $8 million roster bonus that’s due in March to go along with his base salary of $8 million in 2015.

After that, his salaries are $15 million and $14.75 million for the final two years of the agreement.

Fitzgerald finished the regular season with 63 catches for 784 yards and two touchdowns over the course of 14 games. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 31 receiver out of 110 qualifying players.
