Report: Cardinals & Patrick Peterson Negotiating An Extension Worth Over $60M

Update:

According to ESPN, the Cardinals and CB Patrick Peterson are in fact discussing a contract extension that would pay him in excess of $60 million.

This comes shortly after a report from last night mentioned that Peterson is hoping to do better than Seahawks CB Richard Sherman‘s five-year, $58.789 million.

Cardinals CB Patrick Peterson mentioned on Monday that the two sides are currently in the early stages of contract talks regarding a long-term extension.

Interestingly enough, Peterson believes he’s worth more than Seahawks CB Richard Sherman who just became the highest paid cornerback in the league after signing a five-year, $58.789 million deal that includes $40 million guaranteed.

I’m making OK money right now, but I’m just not making his money right now,” a laughing Peterson said, via ESPN.com.

“I think cornerbacks are definitely worth the dollars that they get because now this league is a passing league,” he said. “You need that shutdown corner to lock down one side of the field, or like myself, go out there the entire field.

Peterson, still just 23 years old, has quickly established himself as one of the best cornerbacks in the league and is even in the discussion for the best athlete in the game.

He’s entering the final year of his rookie contract and stands to make $2,888,114 for the upcoming season. However, the Cardinals picked up his fifth-year option which will pay him $10.081 million in 2015.

I’m sure the Cardinals would like to get a deal done before then in order to create a more manageable cap figure.

“We’ll see,” Peterson said. “Got to ask the Cardinals. I mean, I think I am but at the end of the day both sides have to agree to terms and we’ll see what those terms are and hopefully sooner than later.”

Last year, Peterson appeared in all 16 games and totaled 42 tackles, three interceptions and 13 pass defenses while contributing 198 punt return yards.

Pro Football Focus rated Peterson the No. 16 cornerback in the 2013 season.
