Cardinals Place DB Tyrann Mathieu On Injured Reserve, Promote S Trevon Hartfield

The Arizona Cardinals announced Friday that they’ve placed DB Tyrann Mathieu on season-ending injured reserve and promoted S Trevon Hartfield to their active roster.

Mathieu tried to tough out playing through his shoulder injury, but it was clear that he wasn’t able to play at the same level.

“He gave it everything he had,” Cardinals HC Bruce Arians said of Mathieu. “It ain’t Ty.”

Mathieu, 24, is a former third-round pick of the Cardinals back in 2013. He signed five-year, $64.1 million contract with the Cardinals that includes $35 million guaranteed several months ago.

Mathieu stands to make base salaries of $4.75 million and $5.75 million over the next two years of his contract.

This season, Mathieu appeared in 10 games for the Cardinals and recorded 35 tackles, one interception, a forced fumble and four pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 59 safety out of 88 qualifying players.
