Cardinals QB Carson Palmer Expects To Play In 2017

Following Sunday’s loss to the Saints, Cardinals QB Carson Palmer told reporters that he hasn’t thought about next year but he expects to play in 2017, per Mike Jurecki.

There has been some speculation about the Cardinals moving on from Palmer and targeting a new quarterback. In fact, the Cardinals have been tossed out as a potential landing spot for Cowboys QB Tony Romo, should Dallas look to move on from him next year.

However, Cardinals GM Steve Keim mentioned this past week that “based on conversations I had with them in training camp, I’d be surprised if [Carson Palmer and Larry Fitzgerald] didn’t play next year,” via AzCardinals.com.

Palmer, 36, was in the third year of his four-year, $58.5 million contract and set to make a base salary of $6.35 million for the 2016 season when the Cardinals signed him to a one-year extension worth $24.35 million before the start of the season.

According to OverTheCap.com, designating Palmer as a June 1 release would free up $17.5 million in available cap space while creating $6,625,000 in dead money.

Entering today’s game, Palmer has appeared in 12 games and thrown for 3,376 yards while completing 60.9 percent of his passes to go along with 20 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Pro Football Focus has Palmer rated as the No. 19 quarterback out of 37 qualifying players.
