Cardinals Re-Sign Veteran LB Philip Wheeler, Waive LB Scooby Wright

The Arizona Cardinals announced Monday that they’ve re-signed LB Philip Wheeler and placed LB Scooby Wright on waivers.

Wheeler, 32, is a former third-round pick of the Colts back in 2008. He spent four years in Indianapolis before signing on with the Raiders as a free agent in 2012.

Wheeler lasted just one year in Oakland before he caught on with the Dolphins after he was cut loose. The Falcons elected to sign him to a contract during the season in 2015.

The Cardinals signed him to a contract back in July and he managed to make the 53-man roster coming out of the preseason before he was cut loose last week.

In 2016, Wheeler appeared in all 16 games for the Falcons and recorded 28 total tackles.

Wright, 23, is a former seventh-round pick of the Browns back in 2016. He was cut loose a few weeks into the 2016 season before later signing on to the Browns’ practice squad.

The Cardinals would later sign him to their active roster in December of last year. Unfortunately, Wright was cut loose last weekend as they trimmed their roster down to 53 players and later signed to their practice squad.

In 2016, Wright appeared in three games for Arizona and recorded two total tackles.

During his college career at Arizona, Wright recorded 270 tackles, 43.5 tackles for a loss, 17 sacks, an interception, five forced fumbles, a recovery and a pass defense.
