Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald Returning For 2017 Season

Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald tells Jim Trotter of ESPN that he’s “definitely” returning next year and plans to play out the final years of his contract.

There had been talk that Fitzgerald could call it a career and retire from the NFL, but it sounds like he plans to hold off on that and see how things go in 2017.

The Cardinals have said publicly that they were hoping to hear from Fitzgerald and QB Carson Palmer about their plans for next year in the coming weeks in case they needed to begin targeting replacements for them.

Fitzgerald’s return could be viewed as a good sign for Palmer, as it would be far less appealing for him to come back and play with a new quarterback.

Fitzgerald, 33, agreed to renegotiate his seven-year $113 million contract and signed a two-year, $22 million deal with Arizona that was fully guaranteed included a no-trade clause last year. Arizona gave him another one-year, $11 million extension before the season, so he’s under contract through 2017.

In 2016, Fitzgerald has appeared in all 16 games for the Cardinals and caught 107 passes for 1023 yards receiving and six touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 10 receiver out of 115 qualifying players.
