Cardinals Have “Zero Interest” In QB Jay Cutler

Yesterday, Peter King of TheMMQB.com mentioned that he wouldn’t be shocked to see Jay Cutler end up with the Cardinals.

However, Kent Somers is reporting that the Cardinals have “zero interest” in adding Cutler this offseason.

Darren Urban isn’t sure why Cutler would have any interest in being the Cardinals’ backup to Carson Palmer in the first place.

The idea seemed a little strange in the first place, as Cutler figures to be looking for a starting job once he’s officially released by the Bears. There are a number of teams in the market for quarterback help this offseason including the 49ers, Bills, Browns, Jets and possibly even teams like the Texans and Broncos, depending on who’s available to them.

Had Palmer decided to retire, the Cardinals would have been an attractive situation for free agent quarterbacks. Although, Arizona is reportedly focused on finding their quarterback of the future, as opposed to bringing in a stop gap, so they could turn their attention to prospects in this year’s draft class.

There’s also the question of whether HC Bruce Arians will return after the 2017 season, considering that there was talk he could retire a few months ago.

Cutler, 33, is a former first-round pick of the Broncos back in 2006. He spent three years in Denver before he was traded to the Bears in 2009. He’s currently in the fourth year of his seven-year, $126.7 million contract that included $54 million guaranteed and stands to make a base salary of $12.5 million for the 2017 season to go along with a $2.5 million roster bonus.

Cutler has no guaranteed money left on his contract and Chicago would only take a $2 million salary cap hit by releasing him this year. The Bears would pick up $13 million in salary-cap space should they cut him loose.

In 2016, Cutler appeared in five games and throw for 1,059 yards while completing 59.1 percent of his passes to go along with four touchdowns and five interceptions.

We’ll have more regarding Cutler and where he could end up as the news is available.
