Packers CB Tramon Williams Could Be On The Chopping Block This Offseason

According to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com, CB Tramon Williams “fits the profile of the kind of player the Green Bay Packers might part ways with after the season.

Williams, 31 in March, hasn’t been playing at as high of level as was just a few years ago, which could be attributed to lingering effects from injuries he has suffered in the last few seasons. Against the Giants, however, Williams put together one of the best games of his career.

Williams is currently one of the highest paid defensive players on the team in terms of base salary, and has been overtaken as the team’s shutdown corner by Sam Shields. Williams is in line to make $7.5 million for the 2014 season.

Next year the Packers will need to decide whether or not they see Shields, 25, as a worthy long-term investment. If so, Williams is an obvious candidate to either take a pay cut or get released.

However, repeated performances like the one against the Giants – reminiscent of his best in 2010 when he was a key figure in the team’s Super Bowl run – could save Williams’ career in Green Bay.
