Cedric Benson’s Future In Cincinnati In Doubt

Cincinnati Bengals OC Jay Gruden discussed his preseason plan for the Bengals running game with Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer.

What’s interesting about Gruden’s comments is that he mentioned the idea was to give backup RB Bernard Scott more work than he ended up receiving this year. Instead, Cedric Benson wound up dictating his workload more than Gruden figured.

The more you give it to Bernard the more you’ve got Cedric over there scratching his head and not real happy,” said Gruden. “Really, to me, on a good football team nobody should worry about who’s scoring or who’s getting the ball so long as the team is moving.”

Not really what you want to hear as a Bengals fan considering that it’s the coaches responsibility to do what’s in the best interest of the team.

Gruden mentions that the running game will be an aspect that the team works to improve next season.

As many times as we ran it and as [few] big plays we had, it’s a major area to try to improve on,” Gruden said.

Benson will be a free agent again this offseason and considering that the Bengals have two first-round picks, there’s a good chance that the team will look to get younger at position.
