Champ Bailey An Option For The 49ers?

Kevin Lynch of the San Francisco Chronicle suggests that free agent CB Champ Bailey could be an option for the 49ers following the recent arrest of CB Chris Culliver.

Culliver, 25, was arrested on Friday for felony hit-and-run and weapons possession. As things stand right now, there is a chance that Culliver could end up miss games this season due to serving jail time and/or a suspension handed down by the NFL.

The 49ers needed depth at cornerback even before Culliver’s recent arrest, but it now appears as though this has become a priority for them to address in the coming weeks.

Lynch mentions that Bailey could be a “steadying influence” on the team’s locker room and expects him to be more productive with an offseason to recover from the foot injury that cost him most of the 2013 season.

Bailey, 35, was cut loose by the Broncos a few weeks ago, which came as little surprise given his age and salary for the 2014 season.

Last year, he totaled 14 tackles over the course of just five games last year. There are obvious concerns regarding his age future production, but the 49ers signed Nnamdi Asomugha to a contract last year in attempt to add more depth at cornerback. Bailey should, at the very least, be better than Asomugha was last year.

The Falcons have also come up as a speculative landing spot for Bailey. We have him listed as the No. 25 player in our Best Available Free Agents list.
