“No Chance” The Cardinals Trade Larry Fitzgerald After Restructuring His Contract

Albert Breer of the NFL Network mentions that there is “no chance” the Cardinals are trading WR Larry Fitzgerald now that his contract has been restructured.

Breer adds that the Cardinals will likely convert his base salary into a signing bonus, which is basically paying him for the 2014 season preemptively.

Tom Curran of CSN New England reported last week that the New England Patriots were interested in trading for Fitzgerald last offseason, but it now appears as though he’ll remain in Arizona for the foreseeable future.

According to early projections, the Cardinals could end up saving $7-9.5 million in cap space for the 2014 season based on this move alone. However, this just pushes off cap hits until future years.

  • Brian McIntyre mentions that Fitzgerald’s 2015 cap figure is already $21.25 million and the new structure could increase that further.

Fitzgerald, 30, has four years remaining on his eight-year deal worth $128.5 million contract that included $50 million guaranteed.
