The San Diego Chargers announced Tuesday that they’ve agreed to terms with DE Corey Liuget on a multi-year contract extension.

Corey is a consummate team player who goes about his work in an unselfish manner,” GM Tom Telesco said. “His preparation and dedication to the game and the Chargers has been evident since day one. Corey is talented, tough and durable, and plays a very important role in our defense. This extension is another reflection of our commitment to investing in our core players and homegrown talent.

“I want to thank the Spanos family, Tom Telesco and all my coaches for helping to make this extension possible,” said Liuget. “This is a dream come true. The Chargers are the only team I’ve ever wanted to play for since they drafted me and my number-one goal now as it has always been is just to continue to prepare and play at a high level to show them how much I appreciate their confidence in me.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Chargers are expected to sign DE Corey Liuget to a five-year contract extension worth $50 million on Tuesday.

According to a previous report from Rapoport, Liuget’s new extension is expected to include $30 million guaranteed.

Liuget expressed optimism on Monday that the two sides would have a long-term contract extension in place at some point in the near future.

“Hopefully it gets done within the next couple days or week,” Liuget said, via Michael Gehlken.

In the end, it appears as though Liuget will end up short of Saints DE Cameron Jordan‘s new five-year extension worth up to $60 million. Jordan received $33.6 million in guarantees, so at least Liuget is close in terms of guarantees.

Liuget, 25, had his fifth-year option picked up by the Chargers last April and now stands to make a base salary of $6.969 million for the 2015 season.

In 2014, Liuget appeared in all 16 games for the Chargers and recorded 57 tackles, five sacks, two forced fumbles, two recoveries including one for a touchdown and two pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 25 defensive end in a 3-4 system out of 47 qualifying players.
