Chargers & DE Corey Liuget Finalizing Five-Year, $50M Extension

Michael Gehlken of the Union Tribune San Diego reports that Chargers DE Corey Liuget is expected to receive a five-year extension that will pay him just over $10 million per year.

• Ian Rapoport reports that Liuget’s extension will end up being worth over $50 million and include $30 million guaranteed.
• Gelhken mentions that a deal between the two parties is considered to be “imminent.”

It sounds like Liuget will end up short of Saints DE Cameron Jordan‘s new five-year extension worth up to $60 million. Jordan received $33.6 million in guarantees, so at least Liuget is close to this important figure.

Ian Rapoport is now reporting that the Chargers and DE Corey Liuget finalizing a “lucrative” contract extension that should be completed at some point in the near future.

Chargers DE Corey Liuget mentioned that he’s hopeful the two sides will have a long-term contract extension in place at some point in the near future.

“Hopefully it gets done within the next couple days or week,” Liuget said, via Michael Gehlken.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported last week that the Chargers were quietly working on a contract extension for Liuget while Gehlken added that there had been “a lot of positive momentum” towards an agreement.

The Chargers appear to have turned their attention to Liuget after they made it clear that they’re prepared to allow S Eric Weddle to play out the final year of his contract.

Liuget, 25, had his fifth-year option picked up by the Chargers last April and now stands to make a base salary of $6.969 million for the 2015 season.

In 2014, Liuget appeared in all 16 games for the Chargers and recorded 57 tackles, five sacks, two forced fumbles, two recoveries including one for a touchdown and two pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 25 defensive end in a 3-4 system out of 47 qualifying players.
