Chargers Discussing Extension With RB Danny Woodhead

Chargers GM Tom Telesco said on Thursday at the NFL Combine that the team is in talks with impending free agent RB Danny Woodhead regarding a contract extension.

We think he’s a valuable part of our offense,” Telesco said, via Eric D. Williams of ESPN. “In his four years for us he’s been a very productive player. He’s a great person, great teammate. And he’s someone I’d like to keep here long-term, and we’ve been in discussions on that.”

Recently hired Chargers HC Anthony Lynn also said that they value Woodhead’s skills as a pass-catcher out of the backfield and how he is a good change of pace to RB Melvin Gordon.

Lynn also mentioned that he has experience with Woodhead from his time with the New York Jets in 2010.

Danny’s a tandem guy,” Lynn said. “He offers some change of pace. He’s quick and has good hands out of the backfield. I had Danny in New York, so I know Danny very well.”

Woodhead landed on the season-ending injured reserve back in September with a torn ACL just two weeks into the regular season. He appears to be on track for a full recovery and the Chargers seem comfortable with him moving forward.

Woodhead, 32, finished a three-year, $7.25 million contract and made a base salary of $2 million for the 2016 season.

In 2016, Woodhead appeared in two games and rushed for 116 yards on 19 carries (6.1 YPC) to go along with six receptions for 35 yards receiving and a touchdown.

We’ll have more regarding an extension for Woodhead as the news is available.
