Chargers HC Anthony Lynn Confirms Ken Whisenhunt Returning As Offensive Coordinator

Chargers new head coach Anthony Lynn confirmed during his introductory press conference on Tuesday that Ken Whisenhunt will return as the team’s offensive coordinator for the 2017 season.

“He’s definitely gonna be my offensive coordinator,” Lynn said, per Albert Breer.

This doesn’t come as a big surprise, considering that reports had said previously that keeping the offensive coaching staff in place was something the team wanted to do. The Chargers reportedly felt that Whisenhunt’s system fits QB Philip Rivers really well and didn’t want to shake things up again, despite the fact that they hired a new head coach.

Whisenhunt, 54, began his NFL coaching career with the Ravens back in 1997 as their tight ends coach. He had brief stints with the Browns and Jets before being hired by the Steelers in 2001.

After working his way to offensive coordinator, Whisenhunt departed for the Cardinals’ head-coaching job in 2007 and actually led them to a Super Bowl before he was fired after the 2012 season.

Whisenhunt spent one year with the Chargers before he once again landed a head-coaching job, this time with the Titans. Unfortunately, it was a short stay for him in Tennessee as he was fired after two years and later returned as the Chargers’ offensive coordinator last year.

In 2016, the Chargers were No. 14 in total yards, No. 9 in points scored, No. 26 in rushing yards and No. 8 in passing yards.
