“Highly Doubtful” Chargers Fire HC Mike McCoy This Week, But “A Lot Is In The Air”

Update:

Jason Cole of B/R reports that it’s “highly doubtful” the Chargers fire HC Mike McCoy on a short week. Although, Cole admits that “a lot is in the air” for the Chargers moving forward.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Chargers HC Mike McCoy is facing a “critical two-game stretch” that could determine his future with the team.

The Chargers will travel to Oakland to play the Raiders today and then will be home on Thursday for their Week 6 matchup with the Broncos.

However, Rapoport says that if this two-game stretch goes poorly, it’s possible that some tough decisions could be made. Although, Rapoport considers it highly unlikely that San Diego will make a move after today’s game.

Sources told Rapoport that some thought the team could make a change after the loss to the Saints.

Should McCoy be replaced, it seems likely that OC Ken Whisenhunt would take over as the team’s interim head coach.

There was talk after last season that McCoy was likely to be out but the team ultimately decided to give him a one-year extension.

McCoy, 44, was hired by the Chargers back in 2013. He’s led them to a record of 23 and 29 (44.2 percent) to go along with one playoff appearance and a 1-1 playoff record.
