Chargers Interview Former Falcons DC Richard Smith For LBs Coach Job

Jack Wang of the Orange County Register reports that former Falcons defensive coordinator Richard Smith is interviewing for the Chargers’ LBs coach position.

The Chargers were expected to hire Robert Saleh for the position, but he’s now in contention for the 49ers’ defensive coordinator job, which explains why Los Angeles is considering other candidates.

Wang mentions that the Chargers have also interviewed Frank Bush for the position.

Earlier in the day, Vaughn McClure of ESPN mentioned that Smith could still remain on the Falcons’ staff in an advisory role, but he’s exploring other options right now.

Smith, 61, began his NFL coaching career with the Oilers back in 1988. He’s worked for several teams over the years including the Broncos, 49ers, Lions, Dolphins, Texans, and Panthers before the Falcons hired him as their defensive coordinator two years ago.

In 2016, the Falcons were No. 25 in yards allowed, No. 17 in rushing yards allowed, No. 28 in passing yards allowed and No. 27 in points allowed.
