Chargers LB Jarret Johnson Retiring From NFL

Chargers LBĀ Jarret Johnson announced his retirement from the NFL on Tuesday, according to Aaron Wilson.

Johnson had said after the 2014 season that retirement was an option for him, so this isn’t a complete shock.

I’m not a spring chicken,” Johnson said back in January, via the Union-Tribune San Diego. “I’m going to go home and evaluate where I’m at. Obviously, what (my family says) is going to have a lot of weight to my future. But whatever I decide, I’m content. I’m happy with where I am as a player, as a person, with what I’ve done this year.

“I feel like I played as hard and as physical as I could and with a smile on my face. If I hung it up, I’m going to hang it up happy, and I hang it up knowing whoever’s coming behind me, I’ve set the stage for them. I hope they’re a better person for being around me because I’m a better person for being around them.”

Johnson, 33, has one year remaining on hisĀ four-year, $19 million contract that included $10 million guaranteed. He would have made a base salary ofĀ $5 million for the 2015 season.

Over the course of his 12-year NFL career, Johnson totaled 349 tackles, 25.5 sacks, three interceptions, 11 forced fumbles, three recoveries to go along with two defensive touchdowns for the Ravens and Chargers.
