Report: Chargers Lose OLB Dwight Freeney For The Season

Update:

Michael Gehlken of the Union Tribune reports that Chargers OLB Dwight Freeney will have season-ending surgery on his torn quad tendon.

  • Gehlken adds that the Chargers will place Freeney on season-ending injured reserve.

This is a huge loss for a Chargers defense who is already without 2012 first-round pick Melvin Ingram and is lacking depth at the position. San Diego could add a free agent at some point this week, but it appears as though Jarret Johnson and Larry English will see plenty of playing time from this point forward.

The Chargers added OLB Thomas Keiser off their practice squad Tuesday.

HC Mike McCoy told reporters on Monday that  OLB Dwight Freeney does in fact have a torn quadriceps and injured reserve with the designation to return is a possibility.

McCoy added that “we’re exploring all the options,” per Michael Gehlken.

Ian Rapoport reports that Chargers OLB Dwight Freeney suffered a torn quadriceps muscle during Sunday’s win over the Cowboys.

The team is still trying to determine the severity of Freeney’s injury and whether or not he’ll ultimately be placed on season-ending injured reserve.
