Chargers Owner Dean Spanos Had “Encouraging” Meeting With SD Officials

Kevin Acee of the San Diego Times-Union reports that Chargers owner Dean Spanos met with San Diego mayor Kevin Faulconer, county supervisor Ron Roberts and San Diego State University president Elliot Hirschman on Thursday to assess contributions from all possible stakeholders towards keeping the Chargers in San Diego.

According to Acee’s sources, all parties involved indicated that progress was made during the “encouraging” meetings and that there is now a better understanding of the required financial framework for a new stadium in San Diego. However, no concrete agreements were made during the meetings.

However, no concrete agreements or promises were made during the meeting.

Acee writes that Spanos still hopes that a deal could be worked out with San Diego officials, but multiple people familiar with Spanos’ thinking believe he’s still skeptical and it’s probably more likely he’ll have to relocate the team as opposed to staying in San Diego.

The Chargers and Spanos have until January 15 to exercise the option to join the Rams in Los Angeles.

Interesting enough, reports surfaced last week which claimed the Chargers are considering a total rebrand of the franchise if they move to Los Angeles. (NFLTR)

For what it’s worth, CBS Sports reported that Spanos “is resigned to the fact he must move his team to Los Angeles during next month’s window to do so and has every intention of doing just that.

We will have more information regarding the Chargers’ possible relocation as the news becomes available.
