Chargers Pick Up $4.5M Of Cap Space By Reworking Philip Rivers’ Contract

Field Yates of ESPN reports that the Chargers converted $6 million of QB Philip Rivers‘ base salary for the 2016 season into a roster bonus, which created $4.5 million in cap space for the team.

According to the NFLPA, the Chargers not have $11,042,402 of cap room to work with.

Rivers, 34, is in the second year of his five-year, $99 million contract that included $65 million guaranteed. He stands to make $16.5 million for the 2016 season.

In 2015, Rivers appeared in all 16 games for the Chargers and threw for 4,793 yards while completing 66.2 percent of his passes to go along with 29 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
