Chargers Place DT Brandon Mebane On I.R. & Promote CB Trovon Reed

The San Diego Chargers announced Tuesday that they’ve promoted CB Trovon Reed to their active roster and placed DT Brandon Mebane on injured reserve.

Mebane suffered a season-ending biceps injury last week, so this move shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.

Mebane, 31, is a former third-round pick of the Seahawks back in 2007. After nine years in Seattle, Mebane signed a three-year, $13.5 million contract that included $5.5 million guaranteed with the Chargers back in March.

He stands to make a base salary $2.5 million for the 2016 season and another $3.5 million in 2017.

In 2016, Mebane appeared in 10 games for the Chargers and recorded 22 tackles, one sack, an interception and a pass defense. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 15 interior defender out of 119 qualifying players.

Reed, 25, wound up signing on with the Rams as an undrafted free agent out of Auburn last year. He was cut loose at the start of the season but was later added to their practice squad.

After a brief stint with the Dolphins, Reed joined the Seahawks and returned on a future/reserve contract. Seattle ultimately waived with an injury designation coming out of the preseason and he later reverted to their injured reserve list before he was cut with an injury settlement a few days later.

The Chargers signed him to their practice squad close to a month ago.

Reed has yet to appear in an NFL game.
