Chargers Place TE Hunter Henry On PUP List

On Saturday, the Chargers made an interesting decision to place TE Hunter Henry on the PUP list with a torn ACL as opposed to putting him on injured reserve.

This means that Henry will miss at the first six weeks of the regular season. Once the six weeks are up, the Chargers will get a three-week roster exemption for them to activate Henry from the PUP list or he would move to injured reserve.

A few weeks ago, Eric Williams of ESPN mentioned that while Henry is unlikely to return in 2018 after suffering a torn ACL, there’s at least a chance he could be brought back towards the end of the year if needed.

Henry is nearly three months removed from undergoing knee surgery to repair his ACL and Williams says that Henry is moving pretty well on the field and has been very engaged during practice.

Even so, Williams expects the Chargers to take his long-term future in consideration if he’s ready and able to return at a later point.

Los Angeles placed Henry on the PUP list at the start of training camp.

Henry, 23, is a former second-round pick of the Chargers back in 2016. He’s currently in the third year of his four-year, $6.38 million contract that included $3.98 million guaranteed and stands to make base salaries of $1.03 million and $1.32 million over the final two years of the agreement.

In 2017, Henry appeared in 14 games for the Chargers and caught 45 passes for 579 yards receiving and four touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 3 tight end out of 74 qualifying players.
