Chargers Plan To Have Philip Rivers As Starter For As Long As Possible

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Chargers would like to have Philip Rivers in place as their starting quarterback for as long as he wants to play.

According to Rapoport, Rivers wants to remain the Chargers’ starter at the very least until they get into their new L.A. stadium.

The Chargers are fully expected to pick up Rivers’ 2019 option next year. However, he’ll be in the final year of his contract, so it’s possible they could discuss some sort of extension next year.

Rapoport explains that the Chargers are comfortable drafting a quarterback to develop behind Rivers for a few years if need be.

Rivers, 36, is a former first-round pick of the Giants back in 2004. He was later traded to the Chargers in return for Eli Manning.

Rivers is currently in the fourth year of his five-year, $99 million contract that includes $65 million guaranteed and stands to make base salaries of $10 million and $11 million over the next two years of the agreement.

In 2018, Rivers has appeared in 10 games for the Chargers and completed 67 percent of his passes for 2,860 yards to go along with 23 touchdowns and six interceptions.

We’ll have more regarding Rivers as the news is available.
