Chargers Pull Their Latest Offer To First-Round Pick Joey Bosa, Plan To Reduce Next Offer

Joey Bosa’s representatives have released a statement, per Adam Schefter, of their own responding to the Chargers’ decision to post their offer to Bosa online.

It is unfortunate the San Diego Chargers have decided to manipulate facts and negotiate in the media. The team surely is not strengthening its relationship with Joey Bosa by taking this stance and making their position public.

We have decided that we will not engage in public negotiations or discuss numbers and/or terms in this negotiation.

We will say, that it is ironic that the team now takes issue with the timing of Joey’s arrival, since the Chargers unilaterally decided to remain silent for the first 14 days of training camp instead of replying in a timely fashion to the proposal we made on the eve of training camp on July 28th.

At this point, all we can do is continue to fight for a fair contract on behalf of our client, as we do for all of our clients. The Chargers can focus on trying to sway public opinion, but our focus will remain on our client and securing a contract for him that is fair and consistent with his draft position.

Ian Rapoport reports that the Chargers had a deadline to get a deal in place with first-round DE Joey Bosa that would allow him to be ready to play at the start of the season.

However, that deadline has passed with both sides being frustrated about the situation.

According to Rapoport, the Chargers wanted Bosa to practice twice before the team played their preseason game, but they now have only walkthroughs between the third and fourth preseason games.

Chargers president John Spanos expressed frustration with the situation Wednesday.

“I’m highly, highly disappointed in the path we’ve had to take,” Spanos said, via Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune. “It’s so overly clear we had no choice. It would have been more difficult if I felt they were being reasonable. But when you’re dealing with someone who isn’t reasonable, it makes it easy.”

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk points out that the Chargers took a similar approach with QB Philip Rivers several years ago when negotiating his rookie contract.

Michael Gehlken of the Union Tribune reports that the Chargers made it clear that their latest offer to first-round DE Joey Bosa was going to be best offer.

• Ian Rapoport reports that the Chargers’ offer to Bosa included the second most year-one cash behind only No. 2 overall pick Carson Wentz.

However, Bosa and his representatives declined the Chargers’ offer and the team responded by pulling it from the table. According to Gehlken, the two sides are nowhere near an agreement.

Yesterday, Eric D. Williams of ESPN mentioned that the Chargers are preparing as if they won’t have Bosa available for Week 1.

The sides remain locked in a contract stalemate over the inclusions of offset language in his rookie contract and the distribution of signing bonus payments.

Chargers HC Mike McCoy said they’ll play anyone who’s available to them, no matter the circumstance when asked if Bosa’s holdout could force him to need a smaller playbook.

“We’re going to play everybody,” McCoy said. “If you have a uniform, you’re going to play. And that’s what the good teams do up front. They’re going to rotate everyone and keep everybody fresh.”

Bosa, 20, was taken with the No. 3 overall pick by the Chargers. It was a bit of a surprise to see them grab Bosa, considering the amount of buzz that they were going to take either take Ronnie Stanley or DeForest Buckner.

According to OverTheCap.com, Bosa will sign a four-year contract worth $25,873,672, which includes a signing bonus of $17,017,216 once they’ve reached an agreement on the contract specifics. The contract will include a fifth-year option for the team to consider in 2019.

During his three-year career at Ohio State, Bosa recorded 148 tackles, 51 tackles for a loss, 26 sacks, five forced fumbles, an interception, two fumble recoveries, and six pass defenses.
