Chargers & Raiders Expected To Announce Relocation Plans In January

Jim Trotter of ESPN mentions that barring an “unanticipated miracle“, he expects the Chargers and Raiders to both announce plans to relocate in January.

  • Trotter writes that it sounds like there could be a “battle royale” amongst owners about the Raiders moving to Las Vegas.
  • As for the Chargers, Trotter mentions that San Diego is “all out of ideas” on how to get a stadium deal done and that it’s up to the city or county to come up with a large last effort.
  • Regardless, Trotter points out that the NFL “makes up the rules as it goes along” regarding relocations, which could help San Diego or Oakland retain their teams.

The Raiders would, obviously, announce their intentions to move to Las Vegas where they have a stadium deal agreed to with casino owner Sheldon Adelson and the state of Nevada.

As for the Chargers, they would join the Rams in Los Angeles and share the new Inglewood stadium that just broke ground last week.

Recent reports have said that the city of Oakland is working on a new stadium proposal to keep the Raiders in the Bay Area. However, Raiders owner Mark Davis has maintained his commitment to the city of Las Vegas, even though some have said the NFL’s preference would be to keep the team in their current market.

The Chargers’ stadium initiative failed last month and didn’t come close to the threshold required to pass. They will need to make a decision about whether to join the Rams in Los Angeles in the coming months or try to work out an extension for their current option.

Chargers’ ownership has said that they would like to figure out a way to keep the team in San Diego but there’s still so much work to be done that the option to join the Rams could prove to be too much to pass up.

We’ll have more regarding potential relocations involving the Chargers and Raiders as the news is available.
