Chargers RB Branden Oliver Believed To Have Torn Achilles

Update:

Michael Gehlken, citing a source, reports that Chargers RB Branden Oliver has been ruled out for the entire 2016 season after suffering an Achilles injury.

According to Gehlken, the team is awaiting MRI results on Monday before officially declaring Oliver out for the season.

Chargers RB Branden Oliver was carted off the field during Sunday’s preseason game with an Achilles injury.

  • Ian Rapoport reports that Oliver is believed to have a torn Achilles, based on initial tests.
  • Rapoport adds that Oliver is scheduled to undergo further testing to confirm the extent of the injury, but it doesn’t sound good.

From watching the play, it’s clear that this is likely a torn Achilles for Oliver, which would cost him the entire 2016 season.

If tests confirm that this is, in fact, an Achilles’ tear, the Chargers will likely place him on season-ending injured reserve in the coming days, as they trim their roster down to 75 players.

Oliver, 25, is in the final year of his three-year, $1.53 million contract that includes a base salary of $600,000 for the 2016 season.

In 2015, Oliver appeared in eight games for the Chargers and ran for 108 yards on 31 carries (3.5 YPC) to go along with 13 receptions for 112 yards receiving and no touchdowns.
