Chargers Officially Sign CB Brandon Flowers

Update:

The Chargers officially announced the signing of CB Brandon Flowers on Wednesday.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that the Chargers have agreed to terms with former Chiefs CB Brandon Flowers.

  • Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports reports that Flowers will receive a one-year contract from San Diego.
  • Ian Rapoport reports that Flowers one-year contract is worth up to $5 million.
  • Rapoport adds that this contract will allow Flower to prove himself next year and cash in as a free agent next offseason.

According to Field Yates of ESPN.com, Flowers’ contract breaks down to a $1.5 million base salary and a $1.5 million signing bonus, which bring his guarantees to $3 million. Yates adds that Flowers can back another $2 million in incentives if he ends up playing 92.5 percent of the defensive snaps and the Chargers play in the AFC Championship Game.

Eric D. Williams mentions that Flowers will now be the team’s second-highest paid cornerback behind first-round pick Jason Verrett who will make $4.48 million this season.

Reports from a few days ago mentioned that Flowers was expected to sign on with a new team by midweek, so this news is right in line with expectations.

The Chargers and 49ers were the only teams Flowers visited, but San Diego was considered to be the favorites to land the Pro Bowl cornerback after his reported meeting with the team.

The Browns, Falcons, Lions, Patriots, Ravens, Steelers, Texans, Titans and Vikings. were all mentioned as teams with interest in Flowers.

Flowers, 28, is coming off of a down season, but reports have mentioned that he expressed a desire to leave Kansas City last season after he was forced to play in the slot. Flowers has already put together a number of quality seasons in the NFL and should have plenty to offer a new team in the coming years.

Last season, Flowers appeared in 13 games and totaled 68 tackles, one sack, an interceptions and seven pass defenses for the Chiefs.

We had  Flowers listed as the No. 1 player in our recently updated Top 50 – Best Available Free Agents list.
