Chargers Release Former First-Round Pick OLB Larry English

ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that the Chargers have released former first-round pick OLB Larry English on Tuesday.

  • Albert Breer confirms the move and mentions that English will not be subject to waivers, which means he is free to sign on with a new team.

We’d like to thank Larry for his five years of dedicated service to the Chargers,” said General Manager Tom Telesco. “Larry always gave us everything he had on the field while making significant contributions to many deserving organizations in the San Diego community.”

The Chargers have added a lot of depth at outside linebacker in recent years, which includes Melvin IngramDwight Freeney, Jarrett Johnson and 2014 second-round selection Jeremiah Attaochu, so there has obviously been talk that English could be on the chopping block.

English, 28, has been a major disappointment since San Diego used the No. 16 overall pick on him back in 2009. He was entering the final year of his rookie contract and was set to make $1.54 million for the 2014 season.

  • San Diego will free up $1,542,500 in cap space with this move, according to OverTheCap.com.

Last year, English appeared in nine game and recorded 18 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and a pass defensed. Pro Football Focus has English rated as the No. 27 qualifying outside linebacker in 3-4 system out of 42 players.
