Chargers Restructure TE Antonio Gates’ Contract, Free Up $1.5M In Cap Space

The San Diego Chargers have restructured the contract of TE Antonio Gates in recent days, according to Brian McIntyre.

San Diego has reportedly converted $3 million of Gates‘ $5 million base salary into a signing bonus that will be prorated over the remainder of the contract.

This in turn frees up $1.5 million in available cap space for the Chargers.

Gates, 34, is in the fifth year of his six-year, $39.8 million contract that includes $20.4 million guaranteed. He has a base salary of $5.9 million coming his way in 2016, assuming that changes weren’t also made to this figure as well.

It’s worth mentioning that Gates is listed as questionable for tonight opener against the Cardinals due to a hamstring injury.
